Greencastle High School Head Football Coach Dave Stephens officially announced his retirement from coaching football this afternoon. “When I came home to become the head football coach at Greencastle, I said I planned to keep this job until I retired. After 27 years of coaching, I have decided now is the time,” said Stephens. Stephens, a 1997 graduate of Greencastle who has been the head coach for the past 4 seasons, led the Tiger Cubs to a 23-22 record during his tenure and a Western Indiana Conference championship in 2023. During his four seasons as coach, his teams won five state tournament games - winning a sectional game during each year of his tenure. He joins Josh Buis as well as Indiana Hall of Fame member John Fallis as the only coaches since 1980 to finish their time at Greencastle with a winning record. Stephens also spent three years as the head coach at Pike Central prior to his time at Greencastle. “I want to thank Coach Stephens for his hard work, his leadership, and for everything he has done for Greencastle High School and the community going back to his playing days here,” said athletic director Jon Regashus. “He has had a positive impact on many, many young people throughout his career both on and off the field and deserves to be very proud of that.” “I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to lead the program at my alma mater and to the people who trusted me with that responsibility,” said Stephens. “Being able to come home and coach here has meant a great deal to me.” Stephens’s son Cole has been the Tiger Cubs quarterback for the past 4 years. In the final game of the season, he became Indiana’s all-time passing leader, finishing his career with 12,281 yards. He is committed to play at FCS Division I Lehigh University next year. “My wife Kate has made sacrifices and been extremely supportive through all that comes with this job- I couldn’t have done it without her,” added Stephens. “Coaching has allowed me to be part of so many young people’s lives, but now I am looking forward to have the opportunity to be home more for my own family.” Regashus stated that Greencastle will begin a comprehensive search for the school’s next head coach immediately.
