While Saturday started with rain-soaked courts, it ended by early evening with another strong win by the Greencastle Girls Tennis Team at the Braves Invitational consisting of Terre Haute South, Terre Haute North, Crawfordsville, and Greencastle. The tournament utilizes a scoring system weighted towards rewarding high individual placings – four points for first down to one point for fourth at each position. With all five of the Greencastle singles and doubles groups winning their critical opening round matches, the win was truly a team effort. Two Greencastle wins at #1 Singles (Ramey) and #2 Doubles (Gooch/Riggle) in the final round secured enough points to take the win. The Tiger Cubs triumphed with a combined 17 points to outscore Terre Haute South (14), Terre Haute North (12) and Crawfordsville (7) for the team championship. The Greencastle win was cheered on by alternates Liberty Amis, Bella Monnett, and team manager Eli Hardwick. The final scores were as follows:
# 1 Singles: Senior Molly Ramey defeated Crawfordsville senior Lauren Hale 6-0, 6-0 in the first round. Ramey then defeated senior Lainey Anshutz from Terre Haute South 6-4, 6-4 for the No. 1 singles win overall.
# 2 Singles: Freshman Maddie Landry defeated Terre Haute South’s Sydney Williams 7-5, 6-2 in a tough first round match. She lost to Terre Haute North’s Caroline Effner 6-1, 6-4 in the second round.
# 3 Singles: Senior Ally Schimpf defeated Terre Haute North’s freshman Yewon Jung 6-2, 6-3 in the first round, but was defeated by Terre Haute South’s Briley Ireland 6-4, 6-3 in the afternoon.
# 1 Doubles: Seniors Faith Hartman and Allison Fajt defeated the Terre Haute South team of Morgan Williams and Abby Joy 6-4, 6-3 in the first round. They then were defeated by Terre Haute North’s Maylee Brown and Olivia Effner in a close match that ended in a super tiebreaker 3-6, 6-2, 10-8.
# 2 Doubles: Sophomore Caroline Gooch and freshman Sophie Riggle defeated the Terre Haute North team of Krista Cotton and Kenley Shoultz in a comeback win 4-6, 6-1, 10-7. In second round play, they defeated Terre Haute South’s Aydea Zinkovich and Emily Wilson in an exciting match that also went to a third set tiebreaker 5-7, 6-3, 10-7 to take the #2 Dubs overall win.
Coach Munoz was pleased with how her team performed. “Two years ago, before our lost Covid season last spring (2020), we played in the Terre Haute South Braves Invitational, and we did not compete very well. This year was a different story”, stated Coach Munoz. Each player “contributed to the team with first round wins and all played very well in the final round, and they all won many games.” Coach Munoz looks to build on the team’s early season successes. She emphasized, “Even though individual wins happened, it was an outstanding team win! Everyone played for each other. Everyone played with amazing sportsmanship, and they represented Greencastle with pride. We are still in the beginning of the season, and I cannot wait to see what this team can accomplish!”
