The Greencastle Girls JV Basketball team had a great win Monday night against Cloverdale to win the County Tournament. This was the 3rd attempt by the County schools to make sure the tournament was played this season, the prior 2 attempts were cancelled due to our snowy winter. Great job to the county Athletic Directors to make sure this tournament was played, so the players could enjoy playing in this great county tradition.
The first round of the tournament was last Thursday, 1-30-2014. The Tiger Cubs traveled to North Putnam and faced a scrappy Cougar team. The first half was very tight with the Tiger Cubs holding an 11-10 lead at halftime. The Tiger Cubs came out in the second half with tremendous full-court pressure to help GHS outscore the Cougars 15-2 in the third quarter. That scoring run helped GHS secure the momentum for the rest of the game. The Tiger Cubs won with the final score of 33-13.
It was a great team win with all 8 players scoring in the contest. The balanced Tiger Cubs scoring attack was led by Freshman Mia Stevens with 11 points, followed by Gracie Smith with 6, Bethanie Burgeson had 5, Kaylee Evans had 4, Lexee Miller, Emma Taylor, and Grace Paul each with 2 points, and Kaysha Murphy added 1 point.
The first round victory secured a spot for the Lady Tiger Cubs in the Championship Game against Cloverdale Monday night, 2-3-2014. This was a re-match of an earlier season game in which the Clovers beat the Tiger Cubs 35-33 on a last second shot. The Tiger Cubs were excited to get the opportunity to reverse their fortunes against the Clovers and to try to win the County Championship at the same time.
GHS came out early in the game with full-court pressure and also relying on their extended half-court defense to help them grab the momentum and use that intensity to spur their offense as well. The Tiger Cubs held a 25-14 lead at halftime. The Clovers had a solid third quarter to make it a 10 point game going into the fourth quarter, but the Lady Tiger Cubs rallied with a strong fourth quarter effort to secure the 47-21 victory and to win the County Tournament.
Leading all scorers in the game was Freshman Mia Stevens with 14 points, followed by Grace Paul with 11, Kaylee Evans added 7, Gracie Smith had 6, Bethanie Burgeson with 5, and Emma Taylor with 4.
Coach Welker was extremely proud of the team after winning the County Tournament. “Our defensive effort was fantastic, the girls played with great intensity that also led to many scoring opportunities that we capitalized on, including shooting 22 free-throws in the game. It was a great team win, our players played very well! Our coaching staff is very proud of them!”
The victory took the Tiger Cubs record to 8-7 on the season with one more game remaining on the schedule at Monrovia this Thursday, 2-6-2014, with a 6:00 p.m. tip.
